- New data from Muval proves an early indicator of ABS data on net migration

Muval, a popular national online booking platform for removalists, has revealed new data showing that provides a crystal ball look into the future highlighting an increase in Australians request quotes to ‘downsize’ to smaller cities and regional areas. The country’s two largest cities, Melbourne and Sydney, recorded the high percentage of enquiries for outbound removals.
In July 2021, Sydney saw -53% net migration overtaking Melbourne as the city with the lowest net migration result highlighting more people looking to move out than in during the city’s lockdown. Enquiries for removalists to help people move house to Sydney are at their lowest levels since January 2020 according to Muval whose data is consistently an early indicator of quarterly ABS data on migration trends. It was only last month in June, Sydney’s migration stats were beginning to improve at a 9 month high of -35% before the 18 percentage point decrease at end of July.
Further South, Melbourne continued to see a decline in net migration, sitting at -49%. In June 2021, this number was -46% and at the peak of the city’s 2020 lockdown, net migration was as low as -61%.
“The trend we continue to see is Aussies downsizing to smaller cities and regional areas with Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide and Tasmania seeing growth in July,” says James Morrell, Co-Founder of Muval.
Brisbane remains one of the most popular destinations for people to relocate to with enquiries over July showing positive net migration to come and no real change since the current circuit breaker lockdown began on Saturday 31 July. The Queensland capital ended July showing growth in net migration enquiries now at 99% and the highest percentage of inbound searches out of all cities across Australia at 26%.
“Our data, which is being used by The University of Queensland for modelling, is based on enquiries to move interstate over the coming 2 – 3 months and predicts we will see Sydney continue the exodus with residents generally relocating to Brisbane followed by Melbourne and Perth. We expect Melbourne to experience a small level of growth with Sydneysiders and some Brisbanites moving there. Perth will increase its net migration figure with strong numbers of people moving to Western Australia from Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane, noting very small numbers looking to leave”, added Morrell.
Ends.
